Where are my dead parents now?
Guidance from Gurbani
According to the Guru Granth Sahib, the physical death of the body is not the end of existence, nor is it something to be feared by those who have lived a righteous life.
The Soul Merges Back into the Divine Light
The central teaching of Sikhi is that the soul (Aatma) is a spark of the Supreme Light (Paramatma). When a person who has lived a good, truthful life passes away, their soul returns to its Source. The Guru Granth Sahib uses the beautiful metaphor of water merging back into water:
"As water mixes and blends with water, so does one's light mix and blend with the Light. Merging with the perfect, all-powerful Creator, one comes to know his own self... Reincarnation is ended, and eternal peace is found." (Ang 278)
Death as a Return to the True Home
In Gurbani, the physical world is a temporary resting place. Death is simply the moment the traveller returns to their permanent, True Home (Nij Ghar). The Sohila Sahib, the prayer recited at the time of death, describes this as a summons from the Beloved:
"In that house where the praises of the Creator are sung, sing the songs of praise... O my dear friends, gather together and pour the oil of blessing. Bless me, that I may merge with my Lord and Master." (Ang 12)
Radiant Faces in the Court of the Lord
In the concluding lines of Japji Sahib, Guru Nanak Dev Ji says:
"Those who have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and departed after having worked by the sweat of their brows, O Nanak, their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and many are saved along with them!" (Ang 8)
Your parents are not lost. Their light has merged back into the eternal, peaceful Light of Waheguru. They are at peace in their True Home.
