Does Sikhi believe in reincarnation? What determines where the soul goes after death?

Guidance from Gurbani

Yes, the Guru Granth Sahib affirms the concept of reincarnation (Punarjanma), the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. However, the Sikh understanding of reincarnation differs significantly from some other traditions, and the ultimate goal of Sikhi is to escape this cycle entirely.

The Cycle of Reincarnation

The Guru Granth Sahib teaches that the soul has passed through countless forms before arriving in human birth. Guru Arjan Dev Ji writes:

"You have passed through so many births, through stone, through earth, through trees, through animals. After all this, you have obtained this rare human birth. Now is the time to meet God." (Ang 176)

Human birth is considered the most precious of all forms, the one in which the soul has the capacity to recognise God and break free from the cycle.

What Determines the Soul's Journey?

The Guru Granth Sahib teaches that the soul's journey after death is determined by its Karma, the accumulated weight of its actions, thoughts, and orientation in life. But Sikh teaching on Karma differs from a mechanical "what you sow, you reap" formula.

The Gurus teach that Nadar, God's Grace, can override Karma. A soul that sincerely turns toward God, even at the last moment, can receive God's mercy:

"Even the most sinful of sinners can be saved, if they take to the Sanctuary of the Lord." (Ang 801)

The Goal: Sach Khand

The ultimate goal is not a better rebirth, but liberation (Mukti), the permanent merging of the soul with God in Sach Khand (the Realm of Eternal Truth). This is described in the final section of Japji Sahib (Ang 7–8) as the state beyond all cycles, where the soul rests in complete peace.

What About Those Who Have Not Heard of Sikhi?

The Gurus taught that God is just and compassionate. The soul's journey is in God's hands, and God's mercy extends beyond the boundaries of any single religion or tradition. The Guru Granth Sahib includes the writings of Muslim, Hindu, and other saints, a testament to the Gurus' belief that God's light shines in all sincere hearts.
